Long ago the War of the Magi reduced the world to a scortched wasteland, and magic simply ceased to exist.
1,000 years have passed... Iron, gunpowder, and steam engines have been rediscovered, and high technology reigns...
But there are those who would enslave the world by reviving the dread, destructive power known as "Magic".
Can it be that those in power are on the verge of repeating a senseless, deadly mistake?

Final Fantasy VI is a story about love and hope. A young woman, born with the gift of magic and controlled by the empire, sets out on a mission to recover an esper found deep within a cave. Her reaction to the esper frees her from the empires control, and she begins her journey to understand who she is. Her quest turns into a fight to save the world from the empire, and the madness of Kefka.

Final fantasy VI was released in 1994. It was released the same year in America, as Final Fantasy III. This added more confusion surrounding the title numbers in the series.
If Final Fantasy IV began the US RPG craze, final fantasy VI sealed it for good. Final fantasy VI redefined the RPG medium, and utilized the full compasity of the Super Nintendo. It is the first title that love, and friendship was key elements to the story. Each character was given detailed background treatment, thus enabling the player to get a closer connection to the story. There were quite a few Final Fantasy "firsts" in VI as well. There was the introduction of hidden characters, which were not required to complete the game. It is also the first to feature, what we know now as, limit breaks. There were innovative areas in the coliseum, and the auction house, and this is the first title to actually delve heavily into side quests. The game play was definitely top notch. It was worth several repeat plays at a time. The graphics were the best there were for the SNES, and the scoring is definitely one of the greater final fantasy scores. Final Fantasy VI quickly became one of the most popular titles to date. There is a little bit of everything for each person in this game.
In 1999, Final Fantasy VI was re-released together with Final Fantasy V as Final Fantasy Anthology. CG's were added to the introduction of the game. There was also a bonus area added, that showed other CG clips, coliseum list, bestiary, as well as a magic, and esper list. It was the first of the re-releases of former titles, and was well received by fans everywhere. This also marked the first time Final Fantasy VI was released in Europe.
