Eternity is a new MMORPG coming to the PC, created by my very close friend Shawn MacDonald.
Development and work began on Eternity in the summer of 2006. At the time, the game used a lot of principles found in Everquest. Over time, it has evolved and stepped out further than Everquest could possibly imagine.
With so many different MMORPG's out there, what is it that makes Eternity the next great game to hit the gaming world? Well, that is not hard to find out when you being to play. It has addiction, and game play like no other before it. You will find yourself not wanting to shut it off!
The game unfolds in the dark times of Eternity. Here you can create your character from a male or female, and begin traveling the world over. There are quests to undertake, skills to learn, and things to do at every single turn. Monsters are fierce, and rewards are beyond your dreams.
Let us get into what Eternity has to offer. Graphically, it is a new venture, thus graphics are not say that of a PS3 console game, but they are certainly well done. Animation is excellent, as are the enemies, backgrounds, and other objects in the game. It is not choppy or stilted like some of the other games of the same type out there.
Right now there is no musical scoring in the game, but the effects and such found within are descent enough. Sword swings and such can be clearly heard, and are not quite as distracting as it might be otherwise. They are blended well into the fabric of the game, thus almost making it seem as though it is really striking the target. In time, other sounds, such as creatures, objects and other things will be added.
Now for the prize. Game play is certainly the top ranking thing here. I have tried World of Warcraft, Everquest, and a couple of other games in this genre, and frankly I was bored out of my mind. With Eternity, it was not very long, before I was just immersed into the game. Next thing I know it is almost ten hours later! It is just fun, and more fun. It could be the completely open ended game play, or perhaps the hearken back to old school games when they made great games...not great graphics for a poor game. This game has a quality just not found in too many of the high dollar games out there now.
Battle mechanics are very easy to get a hold of, as is the menu system. Everything is right there at all times. There is not all the complication of spending an hour or so trying to get the way things are done in the game. In Eternity, by the time that first hour is up, you are well underway in a quest or explanation. Nothing is too complicated, or difficult. You just slide right into the Eternity universe without a moments delay.
A added plus for most parents is it does not contain outlandish amounts of blood and carnage other titles seem to need to sell their games. At this stage in the game development, a 5 year old child could easily play without being frightened, or seeing things they should not see at that age. Violence within the game is reminiscent of the sprite based Final Fantasy titles, where the enemy either just fell, or vanished.
In similar fashion to say the Elder Scrolls series, the game is completely open-ended. Nothing is set in stone. You want to head into the wilderness and fight insanely tough enemies...you are as free to do just that. Any of the available quests are open from the start. There is not a single place you cannot go and see. And that is perhaps the best thing about it. You are not restricted by someone elses design. You are in control of Eternity, as well as your fate.
Unlike other games of this type, Eternity is completely free to download at this time. Rather than charging an arm and a leg for a monthly subscription, it is simply going to be open for donations from the players. This provides the player with the ability to pay what ever they may want, whenever they want or can. This is far better for most players who live vicariously from paycheck to paycheck. I believe it will create a bigger following, because people do not ever have to worry about losing their account if they miss a payment. There will be no re-activation charge, or anything like that. The players donations can be done through the donations section of the forums when THEY can make it.
This might seem like a step out there in comparison to the titles covered in Final Fantasy Kingdom thus far. This I believe is a step worth taking. This is truely a marvel to see what can be accomplished outside of the big wig gaming companies such as Square-Enix, Konami, EA Games, and Nintendo. And this game, as well as its creator show the great potential of the future of gaming outside of major companies. I have become involved in the creation process as well, and have begun working on artwork and such for future enemies, locations, bosses, and characters in the game.
I have been playing the game quite a lot, and have become immensely addicted to it. I enjoy the quests, love the enemies and challenges, and just have a great time playing. It has become the new game I want to play, over the rivals of Black Ops, Dragon Age, Oblivion, and others. It is that addiction and love of it, as well as my personal involvement that has garnered a place for Eternity in Final Fantasy Kingdom. When this game becomes available to the public, it will be something you will want to play. It may not have the graphical quality of say Everquest, or World of Warcraft, but what it lacks in graphics it more than makes up for in game play. Until I got ahold of Eternity, I had no desire to even touch one of these games. This was definitely a change for me. The tests online have been great, and show signs of a huge following. It is definitely worth taking a look at!
Until then I am opening Eternity to the site with more of a showcase of the stuff you will find in the game. Things from enemies and bosses, to screen shots, items, and spells. As the information becomes available to me, it will begin turning into coverage of the game like the rest of Final Fantasy Kingdom. I hope you enjoy the work as it becomes available to the site, as much as we do.
