Nabudis, The Nechrol and the Deadlands

final fantasy xii nechrol of NabudisNabudis was once a great sparkling city within the borders of Dalmasca. It was here that Lady Ashes husband was from. It was thought that the marriage would bring not only a great union between Rabanastre and Nabudis, but prosperity and hope for the people who knew war was ever threatening in the distance.
Two years ago, Judge Zecht, traveled to Nabudis with the Midlight Shard. He was under orders from Dr. Cid to see how Deifacted Nethicite worked and reacted in battle. The result was nothing short of the complete destruction of the once great city, and all of its surroundings. When word reached Rabanastre of the destruction, King Ramanas knew the only thing left between him and the Empire was Nalbina fortress. He sent Basch to hold the fortress. It was then that the prince, recently wed to Lady Ashe went with him.
Time has passed since the destruction of Nabudis, and it has become a place most feared by everyone. The thick Mist left by the Midlight Shard has covered the entire area. Creatures of the foulest nature have infested the beautiful city, and now no one dares enter its domain. The only race that has survived in its horror are the Bakanmy, who are almost as terrifying as the creatures within.
Before the fall of Nabudis, three Nu Mou sealed two most destructive creatures and an Esper in Nabudis. Though they fell doing so, these creatures were safely locked away, never to be allowed to come out. If ever they returned, they would be capable of destroying the entire world. It was thought that they would never be disturbed again. When the Mist spread through Nabudis, the Magicks sealing them away began to wain. It was then the spirits of the three Nu Mou came back, and began searching for one who could vanquish them for good.

final fantasy xii boss big bombNabudis is first mentioned in the very beginning scenes of the game. Though mentioned there, you will not actually get to see it, until about half way through the game. You can gain access to it only through the Salikawood, after defeating the King Bomb optional Boss. Venturing left will take you to Nabudis, while going right will take you to the Nabreus Deadlands. It is here, that you will get a cutscene with some conversation about it. You will also see Ma'Kleou. He will tell you of the three fearsome creatures that are sealed within Nabudis, and what is happening to the magicks that are holding them there. This is the beginning of a Misc. Quest that cannot be completed, until you reach Archades. Unless you are severley leveled up when you first arrive, you will not stand a chance of going through either the deadlands, or Nabudis. You should not even try, unless you are above level 50.
Nabudis is also the resting place of the most powerful weapon in the game, three marks, and two rare game enemies. It is someplace you will want to explore to be sure. But make sure you are at proper levels first. In this section, I am going to give you the details of all things nabudis.

final fantasy xii zodiac spear Zodiac Spear final fantasy xii zodiac spear

As everyone knows, the Zodiac Spear, is the most powerful weapon in the game overall. It can be obtained within the depths of Nabudis, but only if a certain criteria is met. what is this criteria?? Simple. There are four chests within the game that, if opened, will make the Zodiac Spear disappear from the game. Basically you do not want to touch these chests. The official guide calles them the "Don't Touch That treasure!" Here are the four chest locations that you do not want to open.

don't touch that treasure 1 The first of the treasure chests is located right outside of Old Dalan's place.
don't touch that treasure 2 The second treasure is located within the Royal Palaces cellar. Do not touch the ones in the southeast corner of the cellar.
don't touch that treasure 3 The third is located by the Save Crystal where you regain your equipment, after escaping the Nalbina Dungeons. Just basically leave every chest in that room alone.
don't touch that treasure 4 The final chest is so far after the third, that you might forget about it. It is in Phon Coast. There is a group of 16 chests on the shore line of Vaddu Strand. Do not open any of these chests. Opening any one of the 16 will cost you the spear.

If you managed to skip out on all of the chests, enter the Nechrol of Nabudis from the Silikawood. Now find your way to the 3rd area of Nabudis called the Cloister Of The Highborn. In a small room on the left side of the long corridor, you will find a set of 12 chests. The spear is in the second to the left, closest to the doorway. This spear will greatly increase your attack power, even in lower levels. If you feel brave enough, you can make a run for the spear as early as level 50. Be sure that you have Curaja, and restore yourself in each new area before even moving through it. Just flee the enemies, get the spear, and get out.

A second Zodiac Spear??
final fantasy xii zodiac spearThere is in fact a second chance at getting the Zodiac Spear, though it is more difficult to get than the first.
First you must complete all of the Hunts in Jahara, and capture 10 Espers or more. Now speak with Geomancer Yugelu, and he will unlock the Henne Mines. In the phase 2 Dig, there is a chest containing the Spear...maybe. The chance of the chest appearing is 10%, the chance the chest contains an item is 10%, and the item being the Zodiac Spear another 10%. What this boils down to is there is a 1/1000 chance that the Spear will appear. Also, in order to get it, the party leader must be equiped with the Diamond Armlet. It is difficult, but not impossible. With a set of Zodiac Spears, either your main party has become a massive powerhouse, or you can get some power to your second party. Pretty cool huh?

Secret Merchant Shop

Maximillian 17000
Magepower Shishak 15000
Demon Shield 11200
Ring of Renewal 18000
Scathe 18100
Telekinesis 7100
Ether 222
There is a hidden merchant found within the "Hall of Effulgent Light". Go through to the last corridor to the north. Follow it all the way up, and enter teh room on the right. You will see another room, that does not appear on the map. In the Center is a colored chest. This is actually a Mimic Type enemy, so leave it alone...or fight it. Your call. In the corner to the left of that, a talk icon will appear. Hit it, and a Bakanmy will hop out, and sell you some great stuff. This is the only place you can get Scathe, and Telekinesis. I would suggest getting them above anything else. Also the Maximillian, Magepower Shishak and Demon Shield are the best of the armors you can purchase. It is also nice to be able to get a healthy load of Ethers as well.

Nabreus's Medal

You should have already encountered Ma'kleou in The Muted Scrap, when you first vivited the Deadlands. If you did, you will discover he and his two companions are searching for three medals that were used to seal terrible, threatining beasts in Nabudis. He asks that you find his companions. He believes you to be the hero they are searching for, that can destroy these monsters, before they can break out of their imprisonment.
Medallion of Bravery
The first of the two companions is actually in Lowtown at Old dalan's. Speak to him, and you will discover the medallion was given to a former hero. He in turn split it into four parts, so that it might never be used by wrong doers. Dalan has one piece, and hands it over automatically. If you completed the Crime and Punishment Hunt, you have The Blackened Fragment. If you have not completed this hunt, you will need to now. It is the only way to get this part.
In order to get the third piece, you need to complete the waterway haunting Hunt, as well as the Lost in the Pudding Hunt. Once these hunts are completed, you can now enter the Private Residence. the Seeq there mentions a letter on the table, reading it, he explains that the letter is most likely talking about the Sulce gates inside the Waterway. Head down there to where the Save crystal is. In this room, you will notice 4 gates. You want to open all of the gates, so that the lights are off. Begin by closing Gate No. 11, and No. 4. Now open Gate No. 11, and shut Gate No. 3. Finally open gate No.4. walk over to the #3 gate (The actual panel that raises and lowers. Not the Sulce gate No. 3) and look for something shimmering on the ground. It is just a bit passed the gate itself. When you find it, return it to Roh'kenmou in Old Dalan's. Three down, one more to go.
For the final piece, find Filo in the Southeast corner of Lowtown/Southsprawl. She will tell you that the streets in the city are the only place not checked yet. Head up to rabanastre's Southern Plaza where the fountain is. Find the "Curious Woman", and speak to her. After she gives you her information, head over to the Bazaar, and speak to the two merchants there. One of the merchants will tell you he sold a similar necklace to an Imperial. Now head over to Yugri's Magicks. Locate and talk to the "Sotted Imperial". Once you tell him about the woman, he will ask that you bring her to him. Head back to the fountain, and you will discover her gone. Well, go back to Lowtown's North Sprawl, and find Kytes. He will instruct you to go He will tell you the woman is with Filo. Head back to Filo, and you will find your woman there. Go with them back to the Sotted Imperial. After the conversation, he will hand over the Grimy Fragment. Bring this to Roh'kenmou, and he will hand over the Medallion of Bravery. One down, two more to go

Medallion of Love
The second of Ma'kleou's companions is inside the Magick shop in Archades. Speak to him, and he will tell you he is looking for the Moonsilver Medallion. This is actually the Medallion of Love. And this is the clue you need. Do you remember anyone who was just so in love, that nothing else mattered? Even the fact that their class is not the same? If you remember who it is, head into Old Archades, and find Otto. He and his love are sitting In the northern most part, just before you get to the bridge. Mention the medallion, and he will hadn it over to you. Take it back to Roh'kenmu. He will then instruct you to return to The Muted Scrap in the Deadlands.

Medallion of Might
This is perhaps the easiest, and the hardest one to get at the same time. There is no real puzzle solving, or anything to take time, but there is a vast amount of Deadland enemies between you and the Medallion. Speak with Ma'kleou, and he will tell you to travel to the top of "Overlooking Eternity", in the deadlands. There was once a bridge there, but it was destroyed with the destruction of Nabudis. You must trek all the way there on foot. Head to the Slumbermead. In the top right side of the map, you will find a hidden path. This will lead you to Overlooking Eternity. Once you have finished off the onslaught of Dead Bones, approach the alter. The three travelers will appear again, and hand you over the final medal. They then ask you to please defeat these fell beasts, and save Ivalice. Then they vanish, leaving you to your fate.

Now it is time for you to face these three enemies, and finish them once and for all. You should enter the Nechrol from the Deadlands, saving at the Teleport Crystal. This will provide you the fastest route into nabudis. Head into the Hall of the Ivory Covenant. There you will find your first door. Use the medallion of Love, and enter your first fight.

When you enter the fight, a massive towering Behemoth will loom over you...then fall. Fury will then appear looking cute as ever, and proceed to wipe you across the floor. This little guy uses Hero's March to increase his speed, Dispel him every time he does this. It is actually best to not use Decoy, since your main character just will not survive the onslaught of attacks. Just have him pound away at teh little guy, while your ranged attackers stricktly heal, heal, HEAL! After you get him down half way, he will begin drinking Bacchus's Wine to give him Berserk. Get rid of this with Dispel IMMEDIATELY!!! He will knock a character out in a couple of strikes with Berserk in place. Just keep Berserk and Haste off, keep yourself in good health, and you should come out the victor.

Once this evil hare is gone for good, head back out to the Save Crystal, and save your game. I know it seems like a trek out of the way, but do you really want to fight him again? I did not think so.
Now head over to the Silikawood, and enter the Nechrol from there. Head over to the "Cloister of the Distant Song". Use the Medallion of Bravery on the door there, and enter your second fight.

Dispel Bravery and Protect on this guy right off the bat. He has very powerful physical attacks, so make sure Protect is on you at all times. Use Expose to lower his physical defense. this will make the seemingly undamaging attacks get through a lot easier. Also Scourge will sometimes leave a Sap status on Humbaba, so if you have the extra MP, see if you can get it to stick. Humbaba can Disable and Immobilize the party with a Temblor attack. You can easily counter this by having esunaga gambits on everyone. Though he has more HP, providing you can keep up with his massive attacks, this should be easier than Fury.

Once you have defeated both Fury and Humbaba Mistant, you will be free to go after the final sealed monster. But this is not actually a sealed beast. It is one of the hidden espers Chaos. Head back out, and save your game. Restock your inventory if you are low in supplies, then head back in. For details on fighting Chaos, refer to the Hidden Espers section.

Marks and Rare Games

There are three marks found within the Nabudis area. One is located in the Deadlands, and the other two are located inside of Nabudis itself. The hunts can be obtained very early in the game. Being the locations they are in and the enemies that will join the fight, it is wise to wait until you can traverse through these loacations with little effort.

final fantasy xii hunt roblonThe mark found in the Deadlands is none other than Roblon. This mark is very tricky, since it is in a major location of the Nabreus Medal quest. (See Below) You should try to complete this hunt either before or after taking on the quest. He is in the "Overlooking Eternity". He is very powerful, and will be accompanied by Dead Bones throughout most of the fight. On his own, Roblon, like other Golems is very powerful with elemental attacks as well. He will occasionally sap your MP with Fear, so do not be afraid to hit him qith Quickenings. Opening the fight with a good chain not only will do tremendous damage to him, it can wipe the field of any stray Dead Bones. He is a bit hard to hit for major HP damage, unless you have Zodiac Spear, Ultima Blade, Etc. But you can use Expose several times to get his defense down to a good range. Souleater works too, but only if the Dead Bones are not around.

final fantasy xii hunt goliathThe second mark is just inside the Hall of Slumbering Might, via the Deadlands. He will be accompanied by several Bakanmy's in the fight. Dispel Protect from Goliath, then hit him with Slow and Expose. Goliath only uses Magick attacks, and Silence has no effect on him. Set yourself up with Shell, and return with physical attacks. Keep the ranged characters out, to prevent too much damage to them, while your main fighter goes in with his assault. Have Esuna/Esunaga ready for Disable, or equip the characters with Black Belts. When Goliath's magick barrier drops, you can use his weakness to Dark, and hit him with Darkga for extra damage.

final fantasy xii hunt deathscytheThe final mark is located in the "Cloister of the Highborn", just above where you aquire the Zodiac Spear. Deathscythe will not appear, if you have three party members out, nor wil it appear if they are in good health. What do you do then??? Take one member out of the party, and shut the other two's healing gambits off. Run around the area fighting, until you get into HP critical stage. He will then appear. When he does, quickly bring out the third member, and turn the healing gambits back on. Through a lot of the fight, Deathscythe will be immune to physical attacks. It is a great time to bring out the old Scathe spell. It will do good enough damage, while waiting for his physical barrier to drop. Once that happens, revert back to your physical attacks, and let him ahve it. The fight itself is not very hrad, unless you were unable to keep your bait from being KOed.

Rare Game

final fantasy xii rare game helvinekHelvinek spawns after six Oversouls are killed. At times, Helvinek is capable of spawning with a HP of 99999. He is quite the powerful mare, with the ability to Disablega, and poison your party. He can hit hard with his Snake Lash, as well as cast Firaga. He is located within the Cloister of the Highborn, around the path leading to Chaos (See below). If you are going through with little difficulty, you should have no real problem felling this beast. Be sure to steal the Magick Lamp from him.

final fantasy xii rare game vorresThis rare game is difficult to get to appear. One of the more difficult ones actually. You need first to enter the Hall of the Ivory Covenant. In the area where you pass the door to Fury, you will rarely come across a Dark Elemental. This is the tricky part. You need now lead the Elemental From the north side of the door, to the south side of it. You cannot defeat it until this is done. Once it hits the right spot on the south side, Vorres will emerge. In higher levels, the fight with both enemies is not hard at all, but for the underleveled, this could be trouble. Take out the Elemental as quickly as possible, then focus on Vorres. He will use all the same attacks as any other Reaper in Nabudis, including Annul. This will completely drain MP from one character. Be sure to have a healthy supply of Ethers, before entering the fight.

That is about all there is to do in this area. This is still a great place to get your party up in levels though. So it is good to revisit here and there. Here are maps made of Nabreus Deadlands, and the Nechrol of nabudis. Click on the map to view a full size image.
